'The Griffer' ready to team again with Luck Colts News From Terre Haute
That how Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck refers to secondyear wide receiver and former college teammate Griff Whalen. The pair of an extensive history together, dating all the way back to their freshman year at Stanford.
Both were members of the Cardinal scout team as freshman, although Luck was the heavily recruited 6foot4 hotshot passer from Houston, Texas, and Whalen was the unheralded 511 walkon from Sylvania, Ohio. Both, however, ended up having outstanding careers at the Pac12 school.
Now, a year removed from college, both are still together. Luck was Indianapolis top pick in the 2012 NFL draft while Whalen was one of several undrafted free agents signed by the team the same year.
Ironically, heading into the 2013 campaign, both are poised to be integral parts of a retooled Indianapolis offense. Luck is coming off an outstanding rookie season. Whalen missed all of last year with a foot injury.
But through the first week of training camp, the tandem is off to an exceptionally good start. Luck isn a surprise.
Now healthy, Whalen has opened more than a few eyes among the team coaching staff.
know what, we always talk to everybody about becoming necessary and he is one of those guys that is becoming necessary. Make yourself necessary. He is one of those guys that from a specialteams standpoint, No. 1, he Julian Edelman Youth Jersey can do a lot of things for you, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said earlier this week.
then No. 2, he knows every position as far as widereceiver positions go. I don know if he ever drops a pass, if any. He is very, very reliable. He is no different than Wes Welker in the early stages, <Julian) Edelman, Austin Collie, those type of guys. He is just a reliable guy. He studies his craft. He a gym rat. He here all the time, he working, he knows what to do, he doesn make mental mistakes. It going to be really hard to get rid of a guy like that. He is going to make it hard on us to try to get rid of him. He is doing a great job.
Luck, for one, wasn shocked by Pagano comments. He heard them all Dolphins Nate Solder Jersey before.
has> always surprised people. I remember <him> coming in as a freshman, as a walkon. We thought we had the best scout team in America because <I sort of throw the ball up to Griff and he would go run and catch it. He always surprised people. He ended up earning a scholarship. He just a good, solid, steady guy and he working his butt off. So it good.
Whalen quietly confident Yes, the smallish receiver has his college quarterback to throw him the ball and his college position coach <Pep Hamilton> now serving as the Colts offensive coordinator. And there former Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, another former college teammate, on the team as well as Indianapolis secondround draft pick from a year ago.
That all well and good. But as one of several receivers on the team training camp roster, Whalen knows he hasn won a job www.officialpatriotsauthenticprostore.com/patriots... just yet. But he been in this position before.
certain situations, especially going into college the first few years there, absolutely, and then again right now I kind of have that feeling <of being considered an underdog>. I don really have all the hype and the big name. So I feel like I have to work extra hard, he said this week.
That workload has www.officialpatriotsauthenticprostore.com/patriots... been doubled after suffering a seasonending foot injury during preseason last season. After a full year of rehab, Whalen knows he must take full advantage of his current situation.
was a long offseason because the whole season felt like an offseason for me, he said. it took a lot of work to get physically back to where I need to be as well.
me it was just big, psychologically, that I am back where I want to be. That whole offseason, there was a little bit of that worry like I really going to be back? Is my foot going to be OK? But everything feels great. I happy with that.
First week of practice recap The first full week of training camp is now in the books. Pagano put his team through a twohour workout Friday morning.
After a week of twoaday workouts, the Colts finished up with a single practice. The morning walkthrough was canceled and the team had a full team session instead.
was great for everyone in our organization, especially our players. <We> threw a little curveball at them. There was some threat of rain <for Friday afternoon>, so we decided to switch the schedule. It always good to have a changeup and we had a great practice, the Indianapolis coach said.
thought we made a lot of progress this week. It been a tough, tough week. We thrown a lot at them from a mental standpoint <and a> physical standpoint culminating <Friday>. We had our shortyardage and goalline installation <Thursday> night. We try to simulate the physical part as best we can, but we like to stay up. We had a good session, a spirited session.
Pagano liked the way the first week ended.
was great competition there, We got a lot done in that session. And more importantly we got out of there with nothing major <injurywise>. The only injury really to report is <offensive guard> Joe Reitz got a stinger, got a burner and missed the rest of practice. It just going to be a couple days with him, but I think everybody else is good to go.
Injury list Besides Reitz, the remainder of the team injury list included safety Sergio Brown, inside linebacker Mario Harvey, outside linebacker Daniel Adongo, cornerback Greg Toler, wide receiver LaVon Brazill, offensive guard Hugh Thornton and center Khaled Holmes.
Thornton had been in a walking boot all week after he suffered a sprained ankle a week ago on the final day of the Colts rookie camp. He was out of the boot Friday, which means he might be able to resume practicing at some point next week.
Holmes remains in a walking boot with his ankle injury. Toler has yet to be cleared to return to practice after suffering a concussion in practice Wednesday.
Bethea due back next week Free safety Antoine Bethea missed three days of practice after the birth of his daughter.
looks like they going to get to go home this morning with their child. Everybody in great shape and so obviously he be back up here and ready to go Sunday, Pagano said.
'Sisterhoods of http://www.officialpatriotsauthenticprostore.com/p... Space'
Across a century and a half, the progeny of two presidents Mary Sheldon Barnes 1868, daughter of Oswego's Founder Edward Austin Sheldon, and Paige Stanley, daughter of current President Deborah F. Stanley connected in their love for Shady Shore and their homesickness for the old homestead. "Yet we were always glad to get back to our 'dear old Lake' Ontario, with its murmurs and its thunders last sound at night and first sound in the morning with its world of changing color and its glorious sunsets. That lake and sky have often seemed to bear us up, away from the common world into realms of purest aspiration. Some of us, when away from home, have been stricken with actual, serious homesickness for them," Mary wrote. While searching the Internet for information about her home, she came across a piece Mary had http://www.officialpatriotsauthenticprostore.com/p... written and felt compelled to answer her. "I wrote the letter to Mary in a bout of homesickness for the house and the lake to remind myself that the goal isn't to remain in the same moment that first ignited in me a desire for learning and knowing more about the world, but it's to take that desire out with me into the world to be that spark for others," Paige wrote.
"Knowing how Mary felt about the house and about Oswego, and also knowing that she did most of her life's work far from home helps to remind me that though my roots are planted firmly on the shore of Lake Ontario, I have a responsibility to take what I've learned here with me out into the world and contribute my voice to the marketplace of ideas."
Here are the letters of the two presidential daughters.
"I can remember just the hour when the endless wish to know awoke that divine energy which urges us to mingle with the greater world without.
Just a child, with mother's arm about me, I stood in the little dormer window of my room, looking up and out at the clear dome of stars, that rose from Lake Ontario to the zenith.
There glimmered the softly sparkling milky way, single stars, splendid and intense, drew the space from point to point but best of Devin McCourty Women's Jersey all, I loved groups of stars, the sisterhoods of space, and best of these, again, the three strong stars of Orion's belt.
The stars are all worlds, are all suns like our world, like our sun, said my mother softly.
And through the infinite spaces swept an infinite life that swept my soul upward and outward with it, in an infinite longing to know the bright Jerod Mayo Youth Jersey worlds, every one.
So in a moment, the mind awoke to its energy and joy."
Generations after you awoke to yourself while gazing out into the expanse and loveliness of a Lake Ontario night sky, I started on my own journey to myself in the same place. My bedroom window in Shady Shore looks out to the lake as yours did. It is, perhaps, the same room and the same window. Much has changed in our house over the years not least of which, I imagine, is the view. A vast maple tree now stands insistent outside my window. It might be just old enough to have been the sapling that you could once peer down at from this perch. In the winter, when its branches are sparse, I look straight out to the lake, and each night I am lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves as you must have been. Though the lake is expansive and everpresent here, I have always considered it a companion to only me; a relationship born of sustained and mutual contemplation over the years.
Is it strange to think of your words as a private letter to me across decades? Is it stranger still to think that your journey, your self, and your story have influenced my journey, self, and story? Our unity of place, even though not of time, still links us. We are both daughters of this lake, this school, this house, and perhaps this room. This place sparked in you a desire for learning that you cultivated and carried out into the world. That same spark took root in me here. And from this place I carry it upward and outward in an effort to do that which you have done for me and countless others. Pass it on. "Through the infinite spaces swept an infinite life that swept my soul upward and outward with it, in an infinite longing to know the bright worlds, every one." It is an endless wish to know. Endless, I think, in that not only does it spur each of us onward, it is continually passed from soul to soul as a gift.
